Responsible Making
We’re leaders and innovators in conserving valuable resources and decarbonizing our operations to help build a greener future. We understand the importance of reducing our environmental impact through sustainable practices that minimize waste, lower carbon emissions, and prioritize the use of low-impact materials.
Through our ongoing efforts to incorporate energy-efficient processes and promote circular economies, we take every opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint while creating beautiful, functional products and safeguarding the planet for future generations.
Resource Conservation
Reducing methane emissions, which trap 12x more heat than carbon dioxide, is vital for combating climate change. By prioritizing waste diversion, we mitigate this environmental impact and do our part to contribute to a healthier planet.
According to the US EPA, of all municipal solid waste generated in the United States, 50% is landfilled every year.
Today, our facilities in Kalamazoo divert over 90% of waste from landfills, with a goal to achieve 95% diversion by 2027.
We’re all-in on recycling.
We’re fully committed to recycling, prioritizing sustainability and reducing waste at every opportunity. We implement specialized processes to ensure all steel, aluminum, concrete, films, e-waste, concrete, powdercoat, wood scrap, and sawdust generated in our manufacturing processes is recycled.
Our waste reduction strategies are comprehensive.
We go even further, closely monitoring our operations and identifying areas for improvement. In doing so, we’re continuously optimizing our processes and implementing smarter resource management to reduce our environmental footprint and work toward more efficient, waste-free production.
Loll Designs is A TRUE-certified facility.
Loll Designs' Duluth, MN facility has achieved the prestigious Gold Level TRUE Certification, underscoring the company’s dedication to sustainable resource management across multiple categories. This recognition reflects a remarkable 97.4% waste diversion rate and highlights Loll’s commitment to advancing the circular economy by continuously recycling plastics to minimize waste.
The certification celebrates Loll’s innovative sustainability initiatives, such as the void fill program, the yard sale, pallet reuse, and the Clean Yer Creek project. It also provides a robust framework for strengthening the company's zero-waste goals and reinforces its leadership in the furniture and design industry, as well as within the local community.
Decarbonizing Operations
To best take action in reducing the carbon footprint of business operations, we need to measure and understand how and where those emissions are contributing to climate change. Our decarbonization strategies are rooted in empirical studies of processes and products conducted by qualified experts and aligned to key frameworks like the Michigan Healthy Climate Plan and the ASLA Climate Action Plan.
The MI Healthy Climate Plan and Michigan’s 2023 Clean Energy Legislation commits the state to reach 50% renewable energy generation by 2030, and 100% clean energy by 2040.
We are conducting an inventory of Scope 1&2 Greenhouse Gasses (GHGs), a key baseline for charting our path towards an authentically carbon-free future, and for setting near-term reduction targets.
We go local to reduce our impact.
We utilize local material suppliers and vendor services to significantly reduce the environmental impacts of extended transportation. The majority of our steel and extruded aluminum originates from mills and plants within 150 miles of our facility, and we make sure all our suppliers are regularly audited for responsible environmental practices.
We believe that leaner is always greener.
We follow Kaizen principles of continuous improvement across all aspects of the company—from the corner office to the manufacturing floor. This approach prioritizes waste reduction and pollution prevention. At the end of the day, increased efficiency will always be key to the sustainable use of finite resources.
