What inspires you? In this debut of Projects in Pictures, we're showcasing the imaginative, interesting, and functional approaches architects and designers are taking in lighting outdoor spaces. As this series unfolds, we'll be featuring lighting designs for projects large and small, near and far, and for a variety of uses.

Pocatello Idaho Temple, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pocatello, Idaho

A series of steps flanked by formal landscaping and lush lawns ascend to the entrance to the Pocatello Idaho Temple. Sitting atop a hill, the temple and statue of the angel Moroni at the tip of the spire can be seen for miles. FFKR Architects' design is manicured and colorful. Seasonal plantings, flowering shrubs and trees, and native coniferous trees form a striking backdrop to the temple's light granite exterior and stain-glassed windows. Read more.

Growers Square features Rama area and Torres path lights.

Growers Square, Walnut Creek, CA

The start-from-scratch renovation of Growers Square took a small plaza that lacked identity and natural circulation and turned it into an accessible, central gathering spot. Landscape architecture firm Groundswork's design pays tribute to the history and habitats of the Bay Area, from the art of its indigenous people to its old growth forests and drought-resistant vegetation. Hillsdale North Block, San Mateo, CA

A collaboration among ELS, Stantec, Lifescapes International, and Bohannen Development Company, Hillsdale North Block is a LEED Gold mixed-use dining and entertainment district with an outdoor plaza as its centerpiece. The plaza is a much-welcomed amenity for San Mateo residents and shoppers alike and a memorable gathering space for play, relaxation, and events. Read more.
