Kingswood Park, located 20 miles north of Cincinnati, OH, was deemed by the Deerfield Township Board of Trustees to be the community’s signature park. And when the final phase was completed, residents and visitors from the tri-state area were treated to a park that has something for everyone. A former golf course, the 100-acre space has walking trails, open fields, and a playground for children five and younger, one for children five to 12, and a ninja course for older children, teens, and adults. A plaza with picnic tables, a shelter structure, and multiuse building host a farmers’ market, community events, and summer camp.
“The park, including its state-of-the-art playgrounds and ninja course, is creating wonderful spaces and experiences for Deerfield families.”
Bryan Grome, Senior Landscape Architect and Team Leader with Cincinnati-based MSP Design, was able to incorporate details fitting a signature park in his design, including permeable pavement in the farmers’ market area, synthetic turf in the playground areas, and Landscape Forms site elements. The parking lot is lit with 25’-high LEO area lights, and the plaza and playground areas are lit with pedestrian-scale 12’-high LEO area lights. Hawthorne path lights illuminate pathways throughout key spots in the park like near the entrance and the pavilion space. The furnishings MSP Design selected offer opportunities to relax, connect, and enjoy views. Gretchen picnic tables are located in the plaza adjacent to the multiuse building, and Gretchen benches are placed around the playgrounds. Loop bike racks round out the Landscape Forms furnishings. MSP Design was drawn to the aesthetics of the site elements, and working with one manufacturer ensured a similar appearance and finish and ease of specification.
And the park has been well received. Even the local high school cross country team trains there. “Kingwood Park is our signature park and attracts visitors from Southwest Ohio and beyond,” says Deerfield Township Board Trustee Lelle Hedding. “The park, including its state-of-the-art playgrounds and ninja course, is creating wonderful spaces and experiences for Deerfield families.”
