Adjacent to the Washington Nationals baseball stadium and DC’s Capitol Riverfront, Half Street is itself a destination. Brooklyn-based landscape architecture firm Future Green designed a mixed-use streetscape. The curbless street’s distinctive paving pattern orients both pedestrians and vehicles and creates a dynamic space that closes to vehicles on gameday and for other events. The geometric street patterns are mirrored overhead by strings of lighting.
Future Green worked closely with Landscape Forms’ lighting team to develop the photometrics and devise custom catenary poles that would safely support the long spans that would keep the streetscape open for the softer bioswales, trees, and pedestrain-friendly furniture Future Green desired. The designers relied on the expertise of the lighting team to engineer the nearly 29-foot-tall with a 10-inch diameter and quarter-inch wall thickness and determine the sag and tension balance of the stainless steel cables that span up to 80 feet. The designers selected Arne Catenary Lights with a warm 3000K color temperature and diffuser lens that create a pleasant visual ambiance in the evening.
